How Toyota Kata & TWI has made me a better COACH

Session Abstract:

Baptist Memorial Health Care System began work with TWI’s Job Instruction program two years ago at five of its 14 hospitals in the Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas region centered around Memphis. The need for good instruction skill by our nurse preceptors (medical terminology for “coach”) was evident in the lack of standard work across the board in both common and critical practices. Moreover, it is not at all uncommon in health care for doctors to insist on only using a certain nurse for assistance in their procedures, even though other nurses are available. With cost and quality top concerns, we found that TWI’s Job Instruction was a tremendously effective tool in stabilizing practices and expanding skills in a health care setting. Along the way, we learned that Toyota Kata practice was a perfect complement to our TWI efforts and helped guide, through the Coaching Kata, to a more directed and purposeful use of our Job Instruction skill. In this session, we will look at how our dedicated health care professionals were able to use TWI and Kata to begin saving money and improving patient care along with the many lessons we learned along the way. We will review specific examples of where and how these tools were applied and the results that were obtained.

Learning Points:

In this session you will learn how…

  • Coaching principles that are timeless
  • A structure for daily coaching that is specific and not vague
  • Showing how good coaching can be counter-intuitive
  • Showing how a good coach must learn how to be a good “Learner” first
  • Showing how Toyota Kata is really a “People Development Process”
